Nerve Damage Remedies

Overview of the Nervous System

The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (CNS- brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS- cranial and spinal nerves).  Nerve cells receive and send messages to and from the brain via nerve pathways.  A loss of nerve function can result from nerve damage due to injury or disease. Diabetes can be fatal to the nervous system due to the frequent or prolonged elevated blood sugar levels causing loss of sensation or motor function. Here are a few nerve damage remedies to help.

The PNS has an inherent ability for neurogenesis (ability to repair and regenerate nervous tissue and cells).  The CNS, on the other hand is, for the most part, incapable of such a feat. Though nerves repair themselves at a slow rate of one inch per month, there are things we can do to help the process?  Nerve damage can considerably decrease your quality of living by causing pain and numbness resulting in a lack of coordination, mobility or strength.

Research shows that exercise and repetitive movement might promote nervous system signaling.  Once a task is learned, or relearned, and a nerve pathway is created, the task becomes easier to perform. Neural pathways are generated through repetitive movement and cognition, therefore, scientists believe that exercise may help to rebuild damaged connections.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2004) examined the effects of exercise on animals that suffered nerve damage from injury. Subjects who ran on the exercise wheel showed significant improvement in nervous connection when compared with sedentary animals.

Simply walking or running every day can stimulate your nervous system. According to the Franklin Institute, both types of exercise promote cognitive and muscular function thereby potentially preventing nerve cell decline in your brain. A study published in the “Annals of Anatomy” in 2011 suggested that when it came to nerve regeneration, males benefited most from endurance training, while interval training produced the best results for females. The key is to move damaged areas frequently, focusing on the motions to reconnect your mind and body. Exercise is a good nerve damage remedy.

  • omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can help regenerate the nervous system, according to a 2007 study published in the journal, Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes, and Essential Fatty Acids.
  • In a study published in the Italian Journal of Anatomy and Embryology, researchers concluded that vitamin E is important in the re-growth of damaged nerve tissue following nerve damage.
  • Vitamin B-6 is needed for the production of brain neurotransmitters and can reduce the symptoms of neuropathy, including numbness and nerve pain, associated with type I and type II diabetes. Consuming too much or too little disrupts normal nerve cell communication.
  • Vitamin B-12 is involved in the maintenance of normal CNS function and plays a significant role in nerve regeneration and repair.

Researchers, in a study published in the European Journal of Neurology (2009), found that acupuncture provided immediate symptom relief for patients with peripheral nerve damage.  Additionally, they experienced improved nerve conduction over the course of the 10-week study, leading scientists to suggest that acupuncture may help the nerves to regenerate.

Herbal Remedies

Ed Smith, an expert herbalist and author of Therapeutic Herb Manual, states that although not all herbs have been scrutinized thoroughly using current scientific testing methods, herbs such as skullcap flowering herb, oat seed, St. John’s wort flower and bud, celery seed and lavender flower “serve as restorative tonics to your entire nervous system.”

As usual, it is always important that you consult with your Doctor before starting any nerve damage remedies.

Although the length of time nerves take to regenerate can be lengthy depending on the degree of damage, there are steps we can take to aid the process of recovery such as exercise, consuming the correct quantities of vitamin and minerals, acupuncture and natural herbal substances.
